Workshops and Guides
By [HELP]Swimmer
A workshop dedicated to Fileplanet and it's features.
This workshop will teach you how to properly use FilePlanet as a non subscriber and as a subscriber to FilePlanet and explains what FilePlanet is and what it offers.
First off, what is FilePlanet?
FilePlanet is one of the worlds largest distribution websites for downloading patches, free PC games, demos, mods, maps and other downloads that are available. There are millions of people that visit FilePlanet each month downloading files for their gaming needs.
What is the difference between a non subscriber and a subscriber?
A non subscriber is a person that has a pre existing account with FilePlanet via GameSpy or any other related website to FilePlanet. These types of accounts are able to still download files from FilePlanet, but will have to wait a certain amount of time, depending on how many people are in front of them. Its basically waiting in line. These types of accounts do not have many features like a Subscriber does.
A Subscriber which has paid money to FilePlanet for a membership has many advantages over non Subscribers, when it comes to features. Subscribers have the chance to play hit games before anyone else even sees them, also have the ability to disable the ads and alot more as well as float around the website. You also can download free PC games and guides the longer you stay. Not to mention that you can reserve demos, betas, and auto-downloads upon release, plus there are no lines when downloading.
Where can I become a subscriber to FilePlanet?
To enjoy the features of being a subscriber to FilePlanet and what FilePlanet has to offer you can click here. If you want to just sign up for FilePlanet, make sure you click on the left side for FilePlanet only and not the Founders' club which is on the right side, unless you are wanting a subscription for all related websites to FilePlanet.
Logging in to FilePlanet On the home page of FilePlanet, towards the top left corner, click on the Login URL to be directed to the login page.
Next you must enter your GameSpy ID information to login into the website or you can just do a "One-touch Log in" (if it is available for you). Make sure, when logging in, you have the top icon picked so you can login for FilePlanet and not IGN.
The login page can be found here.
Once logged onto FilePlanet, you can now search for the download you want using the search bar that is located at the top of the page.
How to use the FilePlanet search bar
To use the FilePlanet search bar, you must enter the name of the game, make sure you spell the name of the game correctly with capitalizations and anything else that the game title includes, if not, then it won't work.
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault will be used as an example of how its done
Type in the name of the game, and make sure you have the icon on the left highlighted for FilePlanet and not the web.
fter you have pushed ENTER you will see your results for the game. There are two ways that you will see your search results in.
You will see your search results in two formats, the first format will show it categorized into sections (this is for easy access to patchs, mods, maps, demos, expansion files, etc). And the other format where everything is uncategorized and you can sort by title, date, downloads, rating and size which is shown on the right side
How to download a file from FilePlanet?
Now that you have reached this far, this is where things get a little different for different types of users here on FilePlanet. If you are a non subscriber to FilePlanet, then you will want to click on one of the Free Public Servers which is displayed on the left side and if you are a Subscriber, then you will want to click on the Subscribers Only side, which is on the right, as you can clearly see.
After you have downloaded the file, just run it or open it up and your all set to go.
What is the FilePlanet Download Manager and why do I need it?
To download the Download Manger go to www.fileplanet.com/dlm.shtml.
The FilePlanet Download Manager is a program that allows Subscribers and non subscribers use to it download their files off from FilePlanet. As depicted below, you can see the differences of being a subscriber and a non subscriber has in FilePlanet.
How do I view and what can I edit to my account?
On the main navigation bar, top left, click on the My Account as you can clearly see to the left on the screen shot.
In your account you can change the login settings (ie. Change your GameSpy ID login settings, this including e-mail, password, name, etc).
You can also sign up for FilePlanet's e-mail newsletter.
And if you're a subscriber you can disable/enable advertisements. You can also mange your FilePlanet subscription account information and even view your FilePlanet beta keys for all the problems you're involved in.
Why can't I connect to FilePlanet?
There are a couple of reasons this might happen. Your firewall settings could be to high or you would need to clear out your Temporary Internet Files section within your internet broswer. To do so, you need to open up your default broswer (Internet Explorer is the example here), then click on the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
Now once that is done, you should have the general tab open. Once it is open, click on Delete Files, under the Temporary Internet Files. This will delete all the files that are currently stored in your cache.
Now for a firewall, you will need to set your firewall settings to lower level, but do not diable.
