Can't play your games online? Learn how to configure Norton Internet Security for Arcade and games!
Norton Internet Security is a software firewall designed to protect your computer and/or network from Internet intruders. They also have the unfortunate side-effect of disabling many of the things you might want to do online. This workshop deals with the configuration of Norton Internet Security 2003 for the proper use of GameSpy Arcade. Luckily, NIS 2003 is the most user-friendly version yet! If you are using it on the default settings you should have no problems at all.
By default NIS 2003 sets the security level to Low. Symantec feels this is sufficient for most users. The most effort you will have to put in to using it is to give permission to your favorite Internet Applications when it asks.
**We suggest you turn on the alert tracker when you are first starting to use your online Applications. Open NIS 2003 and go to Options. Check the box to "Show the Alert Tracker". This will let you see what NIS 2003 is doing and what programs it sees going online.
To take it a step further, you can also grant permission to any programs that may use that main application. For example when running GameSpy Arcade, it will also grant permission to any applications launched by GameSpy Arcade.
Go to Options > Firewall Tab. Check the box under "Program launch monitoring".
If NIS 2003 missed an online Application you wanted to give permission to or you clicked the wrong permission when it asked (said no by accident) you can adjust that manually. On the NIS 2003 main screen click on Personal Firewall. Click the Configure link then the Configure tab.
Here you can see that you can choose the Add button and simply point to the Application you would like to add to permissions. Or click on an Application you made a mistake on and edit the permission. Don't forget to Add your games! They need permission to go online.
These are the only adjustments you should make unless you really think you know what you are doing or are completely terrified of the internet ;-)
What may happen if you bump up the security? Here are a few examples:
You try to login to GameSpy Arcade and get a message that you cannot connect to the chat server.
Your game won't launch.
Your game won't launch and GameSpy Arcade is in hibernation mode.
You can't join any peer to peer games (message that the game path cannot be found)
Your buddies complain they sent you a message or request to add them and you didn't get it.
You try to login and it tell you your Profile cannot be found
You click to join a game and it says your cdkey is invalid
You click to join a game and it says it can't find your cdrom
You can't view web pages
You try to download a file and it won't start the download
You finished your download and the file is incomplete.
