Workshops and Guides
By [HELP]Angel
A workshop that deals with the maintenance of your computer to make the most out of it!
Remove unwanted programs that startup each time you load windows permanently by going to START -> RUN -> type in MSCONFIG hit enter -> go to the STARTUP tab. That contains a list of EVERYTHING that starts up each time you turn on your PC. YOU DON'T NEED A LOT OF IT! Uncheck programs you recognize like Microsoft Office or Works, instant messaging programs, print programs, Kazza, Morpheous etc. For those people that have not done this before, you will be amazed at how much faster your computer loads up if it does have a lot of clutter trying to startup on your PC each time you turn it on.
1. (this can also help in prove your PINGS!)
It is a good idea to clear your temp folders on a regular basis. When your temp folders are clean, your computer will run more smoothly on the net, helping with voice chatting, gaming, and all around internet experience.
Open Windows Explorer and go to c:/windows/cookies - delete the contents of that folder (NOT the folder itself!) you can also clear the contents of the History folder, Temps, and Temporary internet files. If you have Windows XP or 2000, these are actually found in the Documents and Settings folder for the name you are logged in with.
Depending on your version of Internet Explorer - you can also clear these by going to Control panel -> Internet Options -> and pressing the "delete cookies" and "delete files" in the Temporary Internet Files section, as well as "Clear History" in the History section.
Internet Explorer also automatically allocates how much space is going to put aside to save things in your Temporary Internet Files folder. It does this by making it a certain percentage of your hard drive. Now if you have a 80 gig hard drive, you will not need 5 or 6 gigs worth of temp space. You can change this setting and stop your temporary internet file connection from becoming to huge by clicking on the Settings button.
Change it to something normal like 5 MB. You can also set your preference of how often Internet Explorer checks for updates or changes to a web page. If you have it set to "Never" then when you visit a page that changes regularly such as File Planet, it is possible you will be seeing an older cached version of a web page and not the latest and greatest. If you set it to check for a new version of the page at "Every visit to the page" then you can be assured you will be looking at the most recent publication of that page.
Run the occasional Defrag and Scandisk of your hard drive. You can use Disk Defragmenter to rearrange files and unused space on your hard disk so that programs open more quickly and run faster. Start Disk Defragmenter by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, pointing to Accessories, pointing to System Tools, and then clicking Disk Defragmenter. You can also do this by right clicking on your c: drive, going to Properties, then choosing the 'Tools" tab. From here you can run a Error Check (Scandisk) or Defragment the hard drive.
Please note when you are running these to make sure you have no virus scanners or screen savers running. They can prevent these programs from functioning and completing properly.
If you have downloaded programs off the internet, or visited a lot of WebPages, you might have what is known as "Spy Ware" on your PC. There is a great tool for scanning and removing that called "Ad-Aware". You can download this program for free, to regularly scan and remove unwanted SpyWare from your PC. Ad-Aware can be downloaded from FilePlanet here.
Regularly update your Windows. Microsoft Windows has a built in feature which allows you to update security files, your Internet Explorer, Direct X and other features of Windows. In Windows 98/ME go to Start -> settings -> windows update. OR you can simply go to www.windowsupdate.com. Click on the link for Product Updates and let it scan your computer. If you have never updated Windows before, you will have a lot of things to download, but doing this regularly installs the latest fixes and security patches from Microsoft and helps keep your computer in good working order.
