Downloading and Installing Steam
To download Steam go to www.steampowered.com or go to www.fileplanet.com/filelist.aspx?s=94750&v=0 for full Steam Caches. Once downloaded install steam by running SteamInstall.exe (the file you downloaded).

Click Next and follow the installation instructions. After installation Steam should update.

Once updated you should be presented with a screen similar to the one above. Before using steam an account must be created, Click on Create a new account. > Next. You should be able to create an account from here.
Activating and Installing a Steam game
Now Steam itself is installed and you have setup an account its time to install a Steam game (Half Life, Counter Strike etc).
To activate and install a Steam game click on Games then Activate a product on steam as shown in the screenshot above. Click Next until you have to enter a Product Code. This is the CD Key which came with your Half Life or Counter Strike game which should be found on the back of the manual. Enter the CD Key, click Next and steam should validate the key, activating the game. If the key is in use contact Valve support.
If you have installed a full steam cache you wont need to do this, Right click on the game you have activated then Install Game. Now click Next Steam will then create a file cache for the game. If you have an older version of Half Life or Counter Strike installed this will be used to create the cache. If you have no previous installation Steam will download the full cache from the server. Once installed the game will update which could take a while. As everything is updated from the server Steam games will never require patches.
